Need Input : Photo Question
Hey all... I'd like some input here.

I've been trying to fine tune a Photoshop 'effect' on some rodeo photos I took last year. I've edited several of them, and printed them out at a large-ish size (11"x14") to give away to a few people as gifts, and I'm doing another to donate to a silent auction at a family reunion next month.

The effect I've worked at is to create a somewhat "hand-drawn" look. Moving the photo away from looking like a photo, towards a 'photo-realistic' drawing, so to speak.

The ones I've done before have all been black and white... it just seems to fit the subject.

All the ones I've done before, I've gotten to the end in different ways. I follow the same basic steps, but each one is a bit different in what I do... which means the end result is always a little different. Some I like more than others... and of course, the very first one I did, is my favorite (which I gave to my dad) , and that's the one that I created the most haphazardly... just monkeying around... so it's essentially something I can't reproduce exactly. Doh!

So, anyway, I'm working on this new one... and I'm not done yet... but I'm liking what I've got so far.

Problem is, at the stage I'm at, I can't decide if I should stick with Black and White, or full colour, or a muted, desaturated colour.

That's where you guys come in.

I'd like you to look at the following three crops from the image, and tell me which one gives you the most hand-drawn look.

Remember that I'm not done yet, so there will be more monkeying around to get the final effect... but just at this step right now, which gives you the strongest impression of hand-drawn.

Please look at the images full-size. (click the images)

Much appreciated.

(1) Full Colour

(2) Muted Colour

(3) Greyscale

I like the black and white one, Moth.

I think the full color looks best. it has a painted look, and a the colors feel more deliberate.

I personally prefer the b&w version.

Soften the edges a tad, perhaps ?

Full color, most definably. Most people in that medium wouldn't do a scene like that in B&W. That's what I'm assuming though. The color really gives it life.

I like where you went with it. It does indeed look like a drawing. What I would suggest is if you are going to go with the full color one, then be sure to desaturate the bright spots. The fella in the ring on the bull(?) his left cheek is a bit off. Perhaps soften that a bit. Then the fella with the long hair up top, has a bright red line on his nose, you could desat that a bit, and it'd look more natural.

Before I write a book here, just wanted to lastly mention what a cool idea. :)

Thanks folks.

So far the consensus (here and at a message board I frequent) is for the full-colour version, with a couple votes for the B&W one... no one has chosen the muted-colour one.

I think I tend to lean towards the colour version too, as far as the hand drawn look I'm going for. My dilemma is that I find the B&W image to be more "fitting" for a rodeo image that might be hanging on a wall somewhere... not sure... I'll have to try the colour one and see what it looks like full-size.

Also, just out of interests sake, here's a crop of the original image, for comparison.

As a bit of back-story, one of the main reasons I decided to go for a 'artistic' look of some kind with this series of pictures is that I was farther away from the action than I probably should have been, with the lens I had, so the original images.... when cropped/upsampled to "zoom in" on the interesting parts, are quite soft, as seen in this latest link I posted.

I'm able to sort of "hide" those imperfections by changing the look of the photos, while at the same time ending with a useable, interesting (hopefully) image.

Hrmm... another thing I just now noticed, is how much detail my edited photos brought out in the image.

The guy on the fence at the far right... in the original, his shirt looks almost a solid colour. The edited versions show a ton of detail in the fabric.

Full colour. I'd soften the edges of some of the shadows though - specifically those that are cast against white surfaces. They look a touch too 'sharp' to fit in with the softer nature of the picture, but having said that, it might just be the resolution I'm viewing at.

Thanks for the suggestion Pixie, I'll do that. :)

I like the first one:)

The black and white is more realistic as a line drawing. It has a charcoal feel to it. I like the color one too, but definitely the B&W more.

Thanks for your input Lisa. :)

And Indigo, thanks as well. The look I achieved with the previous photos I've done is sort of a charcoal look.... but again, I haven't quite been able to replicate it.

I think what I'll end up doing is trying, and printing both. Whichever one works best in print, is the one I'll use. :)

Hi all....

I just wanted to clarify something.... I don't think it's necessary here... but at the forum where I cross-posted this, someone thought I was saying that the images shown are the actual, full, photo.

They aren't. The full-photo is just too big to show in a browser window at, or near, full-sized... which was needed to give a clear look at it.

The crops are just a chunk of it, to allow a 'magnified' view of the effect I was looking for.

A view of the full-image can be seen here:

As it stands, despite most people preferring the colour version.... I *think* I'm going to try the B&W first... if for no other reason than I think a B&W image hangs better on peoples walls.

I personally really like the full colour version. It looks more like a drawing to me, but as Chica and Welshpixie have said before I would make soften the bright spots just a tad to give it that more "drawn" look. Great idea. I am looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Thanks for the comment kinnigurl.

I've been working on the black and white version first, almost finished with it.

I'll play around with the colour version next and see what I can come up with.

After much fiddling around and much tweaking and second guessing, I just wanted to report that, in the end, I went with the B&W version, and just got it printed today.

I think I agree with the majority that the colour version looks more hand-drawn, but the B&W just fits the overall image better IMO.

So, it's all printed, framed, and ready to (hopefully) earn a few buck in the auction at the family reunion next weekend (money goes toward paying for the reunion festivities, as well as future reunions).
