DIY Lightbox
Chica gave me the idea to try this, over at her Photo Projectz blog (link) .

I'd thought of trying to make a DIY lightbox in the past, but never felt motivated enough to gather the bits and pieces necessary... as well, I only have the most basic of tools stashed away in the apartment, so even though the DIY projects I'd seen were very simple (PVC pipe, light wood, etc), it was still sort of a nuisance it seemed.

But after having Chica remind me about this idea, I searched some more and found a real ghetto version made out of nothing but a cardboard box, some tracing paper, poster paper, and some tape. I already had the box and tape, so about $2.50 later I had everything I needed.

I'm not really sure why I've been wanting to try this, as I don't do closeup, macro photography, for which this would be great. I'd LIKE to, but I don't own a macro lens (one day... one day...) .

But... still.. it was fun to play around with, and will give me something to monkey around with on days when I don't feel like going out with the camera.

Anyhoo, I'll share a few examples... my first attempts with this... followed by a photo of the low-class setup.

I wasn't able to completely eliminate the shadows... I really didn't have the proper lights. The swing arm lamp was perfect, but the tube on the other side wasn't quite cutting it.

The images have only been cropped and slightly sharpened in Photoshop.

Derr... and just as I've posted this, it seems like the Flickr site isn't loading properly.

So if you can't see the images, or clicking them opens a broken link... sorry! Hopefully it's up and running again soon!

Wow that's totally awesome! Your inspiring me to try it again. I had a problem with yellow lighting, which was odd as I was using one of those lightbulbs that you pictured above. I could get the image sharp, but it would be yellowish and not right. I see that you used two lights though, perhaps I'll try it this next week sometime. :)

Do you shoot jpeg? If so, I wonder what white balance setting you have/had your camera on? I shoot RAW, so I can always tweak the white balance as needed, after the fact.

If you're set for daylight or something similar, I think you'd get a yellow lighting from fluorescents bulbs... I think... *scratches head*

If that's the case, you could try setting it to fluorescent and see what happens (though for me, that gave me a too-blue colour)... or try a manual colour temperature, if your camera has that option, by 'calibrating' it on the white backdrop under your fluorescent light setup ... did I just totally ramble and confuse the hell out of you?

It may have simply been the bulb too... the bulb I normally have in that lamp, for working on the 'puter, is a low wattage light and it does have a bit of a yellowish tinge. For the pictures, I switched it to a brighter bulb that outputs at a colour temperature similar to daylight.

very nice. I've got a funky collapsible lightbox that i rarely use. one of the problems it has is that the opening is kinda constricted, so as soon as I have to get farther away, it's like a bad vignette.

Collapsible would be great... this cardboard box thing is going to be a nuisance to store. o_O

If I find I'm playing around with this a lot, I might look around for something more 'legit' .

I do shoot jpeg, haven't done the RAW thing yet. I did some photos of some toy soldiers this morning simply on some white printer paper, and with flash I was to achieve similar results. With the lightbox, I could do like you suggested or adjust in photoshop lol. With my usual white borders, white isn't the best to use, so I'm going to try a "dark" box, and see what I can do with that.

I've seen those daylight lamps in stores next to standard lamps, and I didn't see much difference, except for the blue you mentioned.

Just got to keep exploring and inventing I suppose. I believe through all the stuff ya do, ya learn and grow, so I'm just going to continue to do. :)

I did try using a black poster board backing... but my result was horrible. I'm not sure I grasp the concept of 'low key' photos. lol
