Life as a Dad : Day 10
Mirror posted @ The Slothful Moth

Five days ago I realized my vocabulary had reduced to all things boob-related.

Well, by day ten I've realized that, along with boobs, the other great topic of discussion in our home is poop. Baby poop.

We've used words like:

  • Mustardy

  • Grainy

  • Runny

  • Explosive

  • Damn it, she just pooped in that brand new diaper before I even got it put on her... that's another diaper gone!

We've watched Emma's poop change from black goo you could seal a new roof with, to soft green mushy-sea-weed-diet-looking stuff, to soft Dijon mustard turds, through to the current, watered down Dijon mustard turds... which happens to be fairly explosive (just ask Lisa, who got her first case of of poo shot all over her this morning :) )

We worried about the different between "runny" poo (which by all accounts is good, and normal, for breastfed babies) and "watery" poo (which by most accounts might indicate a case of diarrhea).

We had out first post-birth doctors visit for Emma today, and she got a clean bill of health... including our description of the poo, which apparently is very typical and normal.

Emma has continued to put on weight, and is back up to 5 lbs, 13 ounces... just 3 ounces shy of her birth weight. So, things appear to be going well.

Mom and dad are tired... especially mom. And we both have occasional bouts of the new-parent jitters (Is this normal? Is that normal? Do you think we're doing this right?)

And we've had our fair share of "what are we supposed to do about...? " moments, such as... do we need to clean all the discharge in her genitals? We know the bit of white goo is normal, but do we need to worry about cleaning it all out? We've been told/read to spread the labia a bit and just do a wipe with a clean, damp cloth... but some of that goo is really gooey, and doesn't wanna just wipe out... and we are unclear of how much to fret about getting it all. These are things they don't teach you in school. lol

But all in all, with all the tiredness, lack of sleep, lack of clarity on how to do some things, we're getting it slowly figured out, and we are loving every minute of it.

HAHA - funny how your whole life changes when you have children. Boobs and poop become very important!Savour this time! Each year of growth will bring a new vocabulary and new things that become important. That is a beautiful photograph Shawn. Good work with the camera.

Thanks all.

Yeah, I like this photo. :)

And yeah, it's a whole new ball game now. Such as... it's 1 in the morning and Lisa and I are still awake with Baby cuz she decided that she is going to be a bottomless pit tonight... breastfeeding until mom can't do it any more, and 2 helpings of formula, and she's still rooting for more.

Where is it all going??? o_O

Around here we call it "magic"....food goes in and comes out as something else...its Magic!

Be glad yours doesn't do it on the carpet!....I wonder if I should be putting diapers on the dog?

Emma sure is a cutie!

Funny you should say that... because we did have to do a quick carpet spot remover job a few days ago after a particularly explosive mid-diaper-change incident. lol

And I get the "magic" of food in poop out... but sometimes Emma just seems so hungry, she eats and eats BETWEEN poops. They say her stomache isn't much bigger than a cherry or so now, but I know for damn sure she's taken more than that in in a single feeding.

And on a side note, today was our first big "I'm going to be fussy all evening" day. She cried and cried and cried. :( We think she's got a tummy ache as she's been spitting up a bit here and there too tonight.
